Equatorial Guinea, back again
Back in March, I had made a post about an attempted coup to overthrow the government of Equatorial Guinea and had referred to Frederick Forsyth's alleged involvement in an earlier coup attempt, which became the basis for the best-selling "Dogs of War." The details on the March 2004 coup attempt were murky when I made the post. Now, we have news filtering out about who may have orchestrated the coup. Apparently, Sir Mark Thatcher, the son of Margaret Thatcher has been arrested (and granted bail) on suspicion of providing funding and logistical assistance for the coup, involvement which sounds eerily like Forsyth's alleged involvement in the previous coup attempt.
What is it with rich Britishers wanting to overthrow the government of Equatorial Guinea anyway? Is oil the sole motive or is there more? What else does a small African country with a GDP of $1.2 billion (PPP) have on offer?
