Dictionary of Cultural Literacy

I have been meaning to make this post since the time I first came across Bartleby's The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy. Short and snappy, it provides context for everything from perpetual motion machines [A machine that could run forever. A perpetual-motion machine would have to produce at least as much energy as was needed for its operation. According to the second law of thermodynamics, such a machine is impossible, and to date none has ever been successfully demonstrated] to Lorenzo de Medici [An Italian ruler of the fifteenth century, known as “Lorenzo the Magnificent.” He was patron of several of the great artists of the Renaissance, including Botticelli, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci].

Becoming a fraud just got a little easier :)
